🏠 Welcome to Parent Taught Driver Education (PTDE)

About This Course

This 24-hour online course is approved by the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR) and meets the requirements for Parent Taught Driver Education (PTDE).

PTDE allows a parent, guardian, or other qualified instructor to teach both the classroom and the behind-the-wheel (BTW) portions of driver education.

This course provides the classroom portion (24 hours). The behind-the-wheel portion (44 hours total) must be completed by the parent instructor and recorded on official TDLR log sheets.

Step 1: Order the PTDE Program Guide

Before starting this course, the parent instructor must order the official Parent Taught Driver Education (PTDE) Program Guide from TDLR.

👉 You cannot legally begin PTDE without this guide.

Step 2: Behind-the-Wheel Requirements

In addition to the 24-hour classroom, the parent instructor must also complete:

  • 7 hours driving instruction
  • 7 hours in-car observation
  • 30 hours of supervised driving practice (at least 10 hours at night)

Download your required log sheets here:

The parent must keep accurate records and sign off on all hours.

Step 3: Parent Instructor Eligibility

The parent instructor must meet TDLR’s eligibility requirements:

  • Be the student’s parent, legal guardian, step-parent, grandparent, foster parent, or other qualified person listed by TDLR
  • Hold a valid Texas driver license
  • Have a clear driving record for the past 3 years (no license suspensions, no more than 6 points, no DWI convictions)

👉 Full eligibility requirements are listed in the PTDE Program Guide.

Step 4: Certificates

  • After completing the classroom portion (this course) and the behind-the-wheel portion (with the parent instructor), the student will be eligible for a DE-964 Certificate of Completion.
  • This certificate is required to apply for a learner license (permit) and eventually a driver license.
  • The certificate will not be issued until both classroom and BTW requirements are met.

Key Notes for Parents & Students

  • Maximum of 2 hours per day of classroom instruction.
  • Course must be completed in linear order — no skipping ahead.
  • Quizzes must be passed with a minimum score of 70% to proceed.
  • The parent instructor must supervise and log all BTW hours accurately.
